Telehealth – Why this may be a great option

For transparency from the beginning of this article, I don’t believe Telehealth consultations work for everyone or for every situation, but for certain clientele at the right part in their rehabilitation process it is a fantastic option.

Telehealth is becoming more popular for certain patients in our clinic and for good reason. Obviously, we can’t apply our hands-on therapy in these sessions, but we can provide a lot of other beneficial parts to someone’s treatment including assessments and reassessments, supervision of rehabilitation exercise programs and progressions of these, as well as eduction about the injury or issue at hand to optimise self management.

Telehealth has provided me with the opportunity to work with clients interstate, those living rurally and also to keep in touch with patients travelling away for holidays and sporting pursuits where they still require some help and expertise around their injuries and niggles. It has also allowed me to continue rehabilitation of patients when I have been away competing internationally for important tournaments and Olympic qualifiers (such as in the photo of this article where I was overseas in Holland).

Telehealth has definitely gained exposure through the COVID-19 pandemic and has proven to be effective when used in the right situations for the right clientele. After being skeptical myself at the beginning of the Telehealth movement, I have trialed it and anecdotally found it has had significant positive impacts on many of my patients.
